- Birmingham - The Crescent Theatre, Sheepcote St B16 8AE
- 19 February 2007 - 12.30pm to 5.00pm
This peer support event is an opportunity for committee members, board members and trustees to meet others in the same boat to explore and share governance and organisational issues. This will be the first peer-support event ever to bring together trustees from voluntary arts umbrella bodies. The event is part of a programme of events and publications produced by VAN for voluntary arts trustees and follows a seminar in November 2007 at which trustees, CEOs and speakers looked at current governance issues. How will it be run? This is not a training day or seminar. Rather it will be a gathering of people and ideas in a warm, friendly space, structured around themes and giving time and space to speak, explore and learn, and to offer feedback and ideas. It will be facilitated by Zöe Willems, a dynamic facilitator and trainer with many years of experience of working with trustees (see profile below). What will it cover? The content on the day will be determined through pre-event telephone/email conversations with trustees as well as by input on the day. This will give you a chance to have your own specific issue addressed as well as to present issues as they come to mind in the session. For example, issues might include: - compliance with charity and company regulations;
- what it means to be a good trustee or an effective chair;
- co-opted, selected or elected? - how people become trustees;
- attracting and keeping trustees;
- eliciting and using the skills, experience and personalities of current trustees;
- constitutions, strategic plans, good governance;
- the relationship between trustees and staff;
- running interesting and inspiring board meetings and writing useful reports.
Facilitator Zöe Willems is a trustee of Charity Trustee Networks (ctn). She is a freelance charity consultant advising on governance issues, strategic planning, risk and project management. Her background includes nine years at the Charity Commission, advising charities of all sizes and shapes, and as senior policy advisor she helped to develop the fundraising provisions in the Charities Act. She is also a lay director of the Fundraising Standards Board.
